Certification of patient journeys

Defining the treatment

Bariatric surgery is an obesity treatment for patients who are at an advanced level of obesity. The preoperative follow-up for this type of operation is very thorough. Indeed, before being able to claim a bariatric surgery there is a whole process to respect. An appointment with the surgeon, a nutritionist and a psychologist who assess whether or not a patient is fit to undergo surgery. Then, it is a complex surgical act whatever the chosen operation. It requires anaesthesia with all the risks that this entails. This bariatric surgery also requires a long and consequent follow-up.
A bariatric surgery department involves a number of activities, of which the patient is not always aware. These include instrument sterilisation, medical record keeping and administration, all of which require a well-trained and experienced team. Given the complexity of the operation and the importance of follow-up, it is advisable to set up a patient pathway

The certification process for a bariatric surgery service will therefore examine

  1. the conduct of consultations, taking into account in particular the reception and management of the patient;
  2. the care of patients through their care pathway
  3. coordination between all stakeholders
  4. emergency management
  5. Dispensing and administering mediciness, the medical products and devices used
  6. compliance with infection control rules

A guide specific accreditation scheme has been developed for bariatric surgery clinics

  • This guide includes the following elements:
  • Governance
  • Team management
  • Medication management
  • Infection control
  • Reception and support of patients
  • Emergency management
  • Perioperative care
  • Infrastructure management

This certification will help you stand out and give your patients confidence, especially new patients and patients from other regions or from abroad.

If you have many patients from other countries, a specific module on the care of foreign patients will be part of the guide. This will set you apart from other institutions and ensure that your patients receive a quality service.
